Barkly to Karumba

A major change in plans has seen us end up in Karumba on the Gulf of Carpentaria.

Having left Barkly we crossed the border at Camoweel and turned off to head North to Lawn hill national park. The road was challenging with 150 odd k's of dirt corrugations and river crossings. I had a problem with warning lights on the dash , 4wd locked out & unavailable then locked on and unable to disengage. On arrival at Addels Grove we set up camp to head into the nearby gorge in the morning, to make a tough trip worthwhile, only to find the gates locked and the gorge closed off for the rest of the year.

I did some kayaking at Addels grove , which was beautiful. Since we were unable to spend days at Lawn hill we decided to come up to the Gulf instead, before heading off to Cobbold gorge. After another 80 k's of rough and dusty road and more car problems, we arrived at Greggory station, where I started pulling bits off the top of the motor to look for the problem, which I did find. It was a broken vacume tube, which I repaired with a piece of plastic and sikaflex. That has solved all the car problems. After another bush camp we have arrived at Karumba.

Back at Barkly heading for Lawn Hill.

An overnight stop in the bush somewhere.

We accessed Addels Grove via the Riversleigh fossil fields. Crap dirt road.

After a tough journey, this is what we found, a padlocked gate for the rest of the year.

Another roadside overnight stop south of Normanton.

My temporary repair on a broken vacume line that was causing numerous problems.

Karumba point, a cold drink and a nice meal at sunset.

Just another magnificent northern sunset from our dinner table at Karumba Point, looking out into the Gulf.

On the bikeway between Kurumba point & Karumba. Plenty of new concrete path.

Home again - Final post

A fairly uneventful few days getting home and then the sad feeling of not being on the road any more. A few pics of some places on the last...
